IUP/MARUM, University of Bremen

Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP), University of Bremen

Bremen

The focus of the IUP's work in environmental physics is the investigation of the atmosphere, the cryosphere, and the oceans of the earth. Part of the IUP is the IFE (Institut für Fernerkundung) which was established to handle our longer-term satellite projects.

MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen

Bremen

The ocean and the seafloor are home to an array of processes that impact the entire Earth system. Geological, physical, biological and chemical processes interact, thus influencing the climate system and the global carbon cycle, and give rise to unique biological systems. Understanding these processes and systems requires specially designed instrumentation for their in-depth examination. MARUM’s mission is to establish and disperse fundamental scientific knowledge regarding the role of the ocean and the seafloor in the Earth system, and to provide impartial information for the benefit of society. With this focus, MARUM trains future generations of ocean experts within an international and interdisciplinary framework, and expands public awareness of the importance of the marine environment.
