DKK press breakfast

“Rio+20 – New Impulses for Climate Science and Adaptation” was the motto of the DKK press breakfast in Berlin on Tuesday, 12 June 2012. The presentation was organised by the ‘Public Relations’ working group of the German Climate Consortium. Over a dozen journalists accepted the invitation to be updated on the latest milestones in climate research. In a comfortable breakfast atmosphere, famous climate experts were open for all questions and willing to give answers. Professor Peter Lemke of the Alfred Wegener Institute Bremerhaven gave an introduction to the advances in climate science over the last twenty years. Dr Paul Becker of the German National Meteorological Service spoke about the immense progress in climate modelling. Dr Alexander Popp of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research gave a lecture on the prospects and risks of biomass energy. Professor Heinke Schlünzen of the Excellence Cluster "CliSAP" spoke on “Cities in Climate Change”, and Dr Josef Settele from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research completed the presentations with a small excursion into the subject of climate and biodiversity.

DKK Chairman Professor Mojib Latif supported and professionally moderated the event.

The BfG a new member in the German Climate Consortium (DKK)

The German Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG) became a member of the DKK in March 2012. The BfG, being a ministerial research institution of the Federal government, adds a relevant competence to the community of climate researchers in this country: The focus of research in the BfG is on water and the environment - with a strong emphasis on practical applications. The Federal Institute of Hydrology provides consulting services and expert assessments in water-related matters. Moreover, it collects and systematically processes data that are used to develop realistic scientific models. For decades the BfG has been monitoring the navigable waterways (rivers, canals, and estuaries) so that it can now draw upon a unique wealth of experience and a vast data pool. Together with its partners, the BfG is investigating under the research programme "KLIWAS" the transport performance of waterways under conditions of climate change. The consequences of climate change for waterways and navigation and the search for suitable strategies of adaptation are in the centre of research here.

The BfG is headed by Director General Michael Behrendt.

Issue paper 'Climate Research Africa' published

The Issue Papier of the DKK working group on ‘Climate Research Africa’ consolidates the perspectives of German climate research on focal topics in the cooperation with African partners 2012 to 2020. It concerns the thematic design of partnership-based programmes for research and capacity building. In the third meeting of the working group on 14 September 2011 the core principles of the dissemination and communication of the issue paper were elaborated. The working group welcomes two new members: the University of Potsdam and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. Thus, the working group has grown to a total of 22 members plus one association, the German Marine Research Consortium.

DKK Media Training

In August and September 2011 the DKK Media Training "Climate research in the media landscape - provision of information on scientific results and processes“ took place in Berlin. The training aimed at scientists, who frequently work with the media, public relations professionals and staff of the managing board. The content of the training was tailored to individual requirements.

The participants recommend the "individual and highly professional" training carried out by the DKK cooperation partner Jessica Wahl unreservedly.

Concert@DKK

For 20 years, the Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin has offered a fantastic setting for the Open Air Classic - and the location of the DKK opposite the Konzerthaus presents an excellent opportunity for a different kind of networking. Partners and friends of the DKK met for the "First Night The Best Of Classic Open Air" on the 7th of July and for the concert "Carmina Burana / Credo" on the 9th of July.

IPCC the Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN).

On 9th May 2011 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN). The report assesses existing literature on the future potential of renewable energy for the mitigation of climate change. It covers the six most important renewable energy technologies, as well as their integration into present and future energy systems. It also takes into consideration the environmental and social consequences associated with these technologies, the cost and strategies to overcome technical as well as non-technical obstacles to their application and diffusion.  Download

Second meeting of the DKK Working Group "Climate Research Africa"

The DKK Working Group "Climate Research Africa" met again in Berlin on 17 May 2011. The group now consists of 17 research organizations which collaborate with their African partners in more than 70 projects in 33 countries in Africa.

The goal of the working group is to identify knowledge gaps and research needs in climate research. The work is based on the exchange with African partners, practical experience as well as on Africa's Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action, the Africa-EU Strategic Partnership and the funding priorities of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Part of the meeting was a workshop designed to detail contents within four thematic areas on relevant research topics. In order to address the problems identified it is planned to realize joint African-German projects.

At the meeting Stefan Roesner (German National Weather Service) introduced the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), a programme coordinated by WMO, IOC, UNESCO, UNEP and ICSU. The DWD is coordinator for GCOS in Germany. He provided selected examples of financial support for observation systems worldwide. A support of meteorological, oceanographic and terrestrial observation systems would also be feasible in Africa. The participants of the Working Group have the possibility to coordinate funding proposals via the DWD. Presentation

Dr Christoff Pauw, International Academic Networks Coordinator of the Stellenbosch University, South Africa, participated as a guest speaker in the meeting and also contributed to the workshop. Dr Pauw introduced up-to-date figures and facts for research in Africa. He illustrated given and planned "South-South" information and research procjects in the area of climate. Dr Pauw outlined starting points for a more intensive and coordinated "South-South-North" cooperation in the field of climate research. Presentation

Another guest speech was provided by Ruth Mann, International Bureau of the BMBF. She presented the activities of the BMBF in Africa focussing on sub-Saharan Africa. In the subsequent discussion the participants used the chance to pose many questions. Presentation
