Im Fokus der Konferenz stehen die Umsetzung aktueller Ergebnisse der Nachhaltigkeitsforschung, die Stärkung der Zusammenarbeit der Forschergemeinschaft sowie die Diskussion über zukünftige Forschungsprioritäten.

In mehr als 10 Sessions präsentieren Forschungsgruppen am ersten Tag der Konferenz ihre Ergebnisse aus aktuellen FONA-Schwerpunkten, wie der Sozial-ökologischen Forschung, dem nachhaltigen Land- und Wassermanagement, den Rohstoffeffizienztechnologien oder der Klima- und Energieforschung und diskutieren deren Umsetzung. Im Mittelpunkt des zweiten Tages steht die Entwicklung der thematischen Schwerpunkte für das dritte FONA-Rahmenprogramm. Gemeinsam mit Experten aus Unternehmen, Kommunen und NGOs wird die zukünftige Ausrichtung der Forschung für eine Nachhaltige Entwicklung erarbeitet.

Northern Eurasia, one of the so-called ‘hot-spot’ areas, exerts particularly important climatic controls because of its potential for large carbon storage or loss in a changing environment. What will happen with the carbon stored in forests and soils, as well as in wetlands and underlying permafrost in the boreal and arctic zone of Eurasia under warming conditions? Increased carbon storage due to a prolonged vegetation period will likely be counterbalanced by enhanced microbial activity that accelerates the release of carbon through respiration. Changes in precipitation amount and distribution patterns are likewise important – also because they impact frequency and distribution of forest fires and insect outbreaks. Direct anthropogenic impacts are at present still relatively small in the region, but industrial development and changes in land use and management may become increasingly important. Many questions regarding the above processes and their interactions remain unanswered.

Who is this workshop for?

The workshop will bring together researchers from all over the world to mark the prospects and needs for action regarding various aspects of boreal and arctic regions in a changing world. Contributions dealing both with research related to ZOTTO and to any other boreal/arctic region are welcome. ZOTTO has a large synergetic potential in the context of forthcoming research projects in the boreal and arctic Eurasia. The workshop is intended to help foster collaboration and networking in order to increase the scientific output of ongoing projects and prepare the way for future projects in the boreal/arctic region. The Institution of Civil Engineers announces the tenth in this highly-regarded series of specialist conferences. Known for offering the best international forum for the discussion of the latest developments as well as informed debate – every event in the ‘Breakwaters’ series has ensured that advances in coastal engineering are appropriately highlighted.

Whilst retaining the historical coverage on shoreline structures, coastal processes, and design and construction of breakwaters and related structures, the conference will extend the marine energy theme initiated with the 2009 conference; with emphasis on aspects at the civil and coastal engineering interface, such as fluid loadings, resource modelling, interactions with the environment, construction, installation, cabling, servicing and maintenance.

The conference will showcase up to 150 technical papers over three days covering all aspects of coastal engineering. All papers in this series are rigorously peer reviewed so will have an in-depth technical aspect giving all attendees access to the highest quality information. Papers are available to delegates in advance of the event to stimulate discussion, and papers are discussed in formal proceedings following the event.

In addition to the main session presentations, the ‘Fringe’ will give opportunities for presentations of recent news, continuing research, and developments in progress. Workshops, short courses and technical visits will also be offered as part of the event.

ACCENT-Plus (Atmospheric Composition Change: the European Network – Policy Support and Science) is a Coordination Action financed by the European Commission within FP7. It builds on the successful efforts of the Network of Excellence ACCENT which over the past six years has brought together the atmospheric science community engaged in global change and air pollution studies. The integrating activities within the ACCENT Network have produced a stronger, more cohesive community and have facilitated the engagement of a new generation of scientists who have started their career in the collaborative environment promoted by ACCENT.

The biennial Urbino Symposia, initiated within ACCENT, will continue within the new ACCENT-Plus Project. As a regular gathering of the whole European science community involved in atmospheric composition and climate change research, it provides a unique opportunity and focus for research. The goals of the meetings are to promote the integration and collaboration of the relevant scientific communities and to establish a constructive interaction with policy-makers. A close link with the most important international activities/projects (e.g., iCACGP, IGAC, iLEAPS, SOLAS, GAW, etc.) will ensure exchange with the international (extra-European) scientific community.

The Symposium will consist of plenary oral presentations, poster sessions and special policy related sessions .

This international conference is organised by and for young scientists (Master and PhD students, Post-Docs) working in the interdisciplinary field of Earth System research, with Earth System explicitly including societal aspects. You will find the opportunity to present your own research in a non-traditional, interactive and interdisciplinary setting. Additionally, the conference will provide a platform to understand and interpret the different meanings of and approaches to uncertainties in the variety of disciplines in Earth System science. Being targeted especially at a broad range of young researchers, you will have plenty of opportunity to expand your network with fellow early career scientists.

The conference continues the Young Scientists Conference series initiated by the three German Marine and Climate Science Clusters of Excellence in Bremen, Hamburg and Kiel. Unlike the earlier conferences, however, this time we invite all interested young Earth System scientists to join us in Hamburg, extending the three excellence clusters and covering all fields of natural and social scientific research dealing with the Earth System, including its governance and other interactions between the Anthroposphere and the natural environment.

  Background The EU strategy for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 points to six key/major societal challenges to which the research community should identify solutions. One of these is the challenge: Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials.

  Aarhus University aims at bringing its research together across disciplines to foster solutions to the challenges facing society. Fifteen years after the Aarhus Convention was agreed, we invite researchers from all disciplines to Aarhus University on the 3^rd and 4^th of October 2013.

  We will assess the current status of the scientific analyses of the future environmental issues and provide input to the European Commission on the knowledge gap and future research needs to meet the Horizon 2020 challenge.  

  The Partnership for European Environmental Research (PEER), of which Aarhus University is a member, will take the collected advice of the conference to the Commission and communicate the views of the research community to DG Research in November 2013, to incorporate these in  the process of developing and improving the strategic research agenda of Horizon 2020.

Der voranschreitende Klimawandel stellt eine wachsende Bedrohung für die biologische Vielfalt und die davon abhängenden menschlichen Gesellschaften dar. Der engen Verknüpfung und der gegenseitigen Beeinflussung von Biodiversität und Klima wird national und international in Wissenschaft und Politik eine immer größere Bedeutung beigemessen. Um Aktivitäten zum Thema „Biodiversität und Klima“ zu präsentieren und allgemein bekannt zu machen, veranstaltet das BfN seit 2004 jährlich an der Internationalen Naturschutzakademie Insel Vilm die trans- und interdisziplinäre Tagung "Biodiversität und Klima - Vernetzung der Akteure in Deutschland". Dieses Jahr feiert die Tagungsreihe ihr zehnjähriges Jubiläum.

Eingeladen werden sowohl Expertinnen und Experten aus Wissenschaft, Politik, Verwaltung und von Nichtregierungsorganisationen (NGOs), als auch Repräsentantinnen und Repräsentanten anderer relevanter Sektoren (Wasserwirtschaft, Stadtplanung, Energieversorgung etc.). Vorgestellt und diskutiert werden zum einen Naturschutz- bzw. Biodiversitätsschutzmaßnahmen, die zugleich dem Klimaschutz bzw. der Klimaanpassung dienen, und zum anderen werden Klimaschutzmaßnahmen bzw. -anpassungsmaßnahmen vorgestellt, die sich positiv auf den Naturschutz bzw. auf die Biodiversität auswirken. Darüber hinaus wird rückblickend auf die vergangenen neun Veranstaltungen Resümee gezogen.

Die Tagung dient in erster Linie der Vernetzung und dem fachwissenschaftlichen Informationsaustausch, aber auch der verstärkten Koordinierung laufender und zukünftiger Projekte zum Thema „Biodiversität und Klima“ im deutschsprachigen Raum. Um diesem Anspruch gerecht zu werden lebt das Tagungsprogramm von den Beiträgen der Teilnehmenden.
