The BKG is a higher federal authority under the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community. It provides geodetic reference systems and geotopographic reference data for the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany and develops the necessary technologies. The BKG provides basic geoinformation without which a spatial allocation of specialist data – such as on climate change – is not possible. In addition, however, specialist information is also produced, for example, in the field of determining sea level changes in the North and Baltic Seas using satellite altimetry. Together with other institutions, the BKG develops and operates procedures for adaptation to hazardous situations – for example, heavy rain hazard maps, forest fire atlases and navigation aids.
