Climate Policy Chronology

Climate Policy - a Chronology

In the past two decades climate policy has become an increasingly established part of environmental policy and has a high priority internationally.  The aim is, on one hand to fight the causes of global warming within the framework of international cooperation (mitigation) and on the other to reach agreements that enable poorer nations in particular to adapt to the now unavoidable consequences of climate change (adaptation).  Increasingly, international diplomacy is trying to combine regional and national initiatives (bottom-up processes) with international obligations (top-down processes).  The roots of international climate policy can be traced back almost four decades.
