The AWI works where it’s cold and researches the relationships between the global climate and specialized ecosystems in the ocean and on land in these regions. The interest lies in the icy worlds of the Arctic, Greenland and Antarctica for which research is undertaken on the research ship Polarstern – the largest European research vessel for this region. The data collected provide, for example, information on the retreat of the ice sheets and the associated sea level rise. The Climate Office for Polar Regions and Sea Level Rise, a climate office for polar regions and sea level rise, and one of four climate offices run by the Helmholtz Association, is located at the AWI. This service facility pools results from polar research and uses these to develop strategies and initiatives to protect the climate and environment.
